1. Architectural & Environmental Measures

Architectural and Environmental Measures are interventions that change the physical conditions of an area or a selected space to reduce the urban heat island effect. There is a wide range of architectural interventions that deal with heat stress. Based on a study of architectural measures that could be implemented in informal areas of the Greater Cairo Region, more than 10 different adaptation measures were identified. These adaptation measures are: façade plastering with and without painting, rooftop/street solar shading, rooftop farming, green walls, sidewalk greening, street trees, greening of unused spaces, window designs, ventilation openings, wind catchers, and solar chimneys.
